Common Window Screen Problems and How We Fix Them
Window screens are easy to ignore until one stops doing its job. A small tear lets in bugs, a bent frame will not sit right, and a whole row of dingy screens quietly dulls your view and your curb appeal. The good news is that most screen problems are very fixable, and often for far less than you would expect. Here are the issues we see most often and how we handle each one.
1. Torn or Ripped Mesh
This is the most common problem by far. A snag, a branch, a curious kid, or just age and sun exposure leaves a tear that lets insects right in. Small holes only get bigger with time.
How we fix it: For most torn screens, the best solution is a full rescreen. We remove the old mesh, clean up the frame, and roll in fresh screen material with new spline for a tight, like-new finish. It is quick, affordable, and far better than patching.
2. Pet Damage and Punctures
Dogs and cats are hard on screens. Claws push through the mesh, and determined pets can tear a screen open entirely. Ordinary screen material simply is not built to stand up to it.
How we fix it: We rescreen with heavier pet-resistant mesh, which is much tougher than standard screen and stands up far better to claws and pressure. If you have pets, this upgrade usually pays for itself by not needing to be redone.
3. Bent or Damaged Frames
Screens get dropped, stepped on, or warped by heat and time. A bent aluminum frame will not sit square in the window, leaving gaps that let bugs slip past even when the mesh is perfect.
How we fix it: Minor bends can sometimes be straightened, but a badly damaged frame is best replaced. We build a new frame to match your opening so it fits cleanly and holds the screen tight.
4. Screens That Will Not Stay In
If a screen keeps popping out or rattling in the wind, the problem is usually worn spline, tired tension springs, or slightly bent frame corners that no longer grip the track.
How we fix it: We replace the spline, address the frame or hardware as needed, and make sure the screen seats securely so it stays put where it belongs.
5. Loose, Sagging, or Warped Mesh
Over the years, mesh loosens and starts to sag or wave. It still keeps most bugs out, but it looks worn and can billow away from the frame.
How we fix it: A rescreen tightens everything back up. Fresh material rolled with proper tension gives you a flat, crisp screen again.
6. Sun-Damaged, Brittle Screen Material
New Hampshire sun is hard on screens over the seasons. Fiberglass mesh gets brittle and dull, and eventually it cracks or crumbles at the edges when touched.
How we fix it: Brittle mesh is past saving, so we rescreen with fresh, UV-resistant material that holds up better to the elements.
7. Dirty or Clogged Screens
Not every screen problem is damage. A season of pollen, dust, and grime builds up in the mesh, cutting the light and the air coming through and making the whole window look dingy.
How we fix it: Screen cleaning is part of what we do. We remove, clean, and reinstall your screens so they let in the light and air they are supposed to, and so your glass looks its best too.
8. Missing Screens
Sometimes a screen went missing years ago and the window has simply gone without. Open that window in summer and the bugs come right in.
How we fix it: We measure the opening and build a new screen to fit, so every window in the house is protected again.
